Continued Rotary Power Success in Grand Am with three top-ten rotary powered finishes! David Haskell and Sylvain Tremblay won the Sport Touring class at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca Grand-Am Cup 200 on Saturday. The #70 SpeedSource Mazda RX-8 was victorious by just 0.6 seconds after two and a half hours of racing. The #68 RX-8 piloted by Schlesinger and Altenburg finished 8th, #67 RX-8 driven by Schlesinger and Altenburg finished 10th. The #50 Southpaw Racing RX-8 piloted by Halpin and Becker finished 13th.
The #70 SpeedSource car qualified 2nd in class, and dropped to 4th after the checkered flag. At the start of the race, the #27 Bill Fenton Motorsports Acura RSX-S took the lead with Eric Curran behind the wheel, #95 Turner Motorsport BMW 330i followed the after starting on the pole.
#27 and #95 were out ahead of the field in the first part of the race. while Shane Lewis in the #20 Nuzzo Motorsports Mini Cooper S lost third to Haskell in the #70 SpeedSource Mazda after going off-course. The the top three positions remained the same through the first caution. After lap 31, the leaders shifted slightly with #70 SpeedSource Mazda taking the lead for the first time.
Eventually the SpeedSource team brought #70 to the pits, so #27 RSX-S took the lead. The #29 Acura briefly held onto 2nd place before Tremblay in #70 was back on the track, charging up, and snatching it away.
SpeedSource was soon back in the lead, with #27 RSX-S in second. The two had quite a gap at the checkered flag over the rest of the ST field. Speedsource's Haskell and Tremblay were victorious by 0.6 seconds over the #27 Bill Fenton Acura RSX-S.
