HIROSHIMA, Japan—Mazda Motor Corporation has announced that the new Mazda2 was awarded the five-star maximum rating in the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) adult occupant protection safety test. This is the second five-star score from Euro NCAP awarded to a Mazda vehicle; the first was given to the Mazda5 (known as the Premacy in Japan) in September 2005.

HIROSHIMA, Japan—Mazda Motor Corporation today announced the launch of the special edition Mazda Roadster Prestige Edition for the Japanese domestic market. Mazda’s two-seat lightweight open-top sports car (known as the Mazda MX-5 in overseas markets) has been newly outfitted with premium features including black genuine leather seats and alloy wheels made by BBS Japan Co. Ltd. The Prestige Edition goes on sale from today at all Mazda and Mazda Anfini dealerships throughout Japan.

Mazda Wins Gold Medal at the 39th WorldSkills Competition

HIROSHIMA, Japan—Mazda Motor Corporation employee Ko Hideshima won the gold medal in the sheet metal technology category at the 39th WorldSkills competition, held from November 14 to 21 in central Japan’s Shizuoka prefecture. Hideshima’s win marks the fifth time that Mazda has won a gold medal since the 21st competition was held in 1973. Two Mazda employees represented Japan at this year’s WorldSkills event, one competing in sheet metal technology and the other in the car painting category.

HIROSHIMA, Japan—Mazda Motor Corporation has announced today that the Mazda Demio was named the 2008 Automotive Researchers’ and Journalists’ Conference of Japan (RJC) Car of the Year. The Mazda CX-7 also won the special “Best SUV” prize. RJC Chairman, Michio Takei, announced the two awards after the final round of balloting.

This year’s RJC Car of the Year (COTY) winner, the Mazda Demio (known as the Mazda2 overseas), is a compact car that combines distinct styling, superb handling and very competitive running costs with the fun-to-drive spirit of Zoom-Zoom. Demio received high marks from RJC for its great fuel efficiency and drivability. The new model is around 100 kilograms lighter than the previous model, and the 13C-V model grade combines Mazda’s MZR 1.3L Miller-cycle engine with a continuously variable transmission to achieve top class fuel economy of 23.0 km/L in 10-15 fuel mode.

Mazda Develops a World-First Catalyst Material Structure for Autos Using Single Nanotechnology

HIROSHIMA, Japan—Mazda Motor Corporation has developed a world’s first catalyst for cars that uses single-nanotechnology to create a catalyst material structure which substantially reduces the amount of precious metals that are used, such as platinum and palladium.

The new development enables Mazda to reduce the amount of platinum and palladium used in automotive catalysts by 70 to 90 percent. It does not result in any changes in the performance of purifying gas emissions and maintains the high durability of conventional catalysts. Single-nanotechnology is a technology that can control even smaller particles than nanotechnology.

HIROSHIMA, Japan—Mazda Motor Corporation will showcase an intriguing lineup of 16 tuned-up and customized vehicles at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2008 with NAPAC. Mazda will exhibit the 'Mazda Atenza Mazdaspeed Concept' model, which is based on the new Mazda Atenza that is scheduled for launch to the Japanese market in spring 2008. The 2008 Tokyo Auto Salon will be held at the Makuhari Messe Convention Center in Chiba Prefecture from January 11 to 13, 2008.

Mazda Completes New Test Courses at Mine Proving Ground

HIROSHIMA, Japan—Mazda Motor Corporation today held a ceremony to mark the expansion of its Mine Proving Ground in Mine City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, in western Japan. In addition to the existing circuit, the proving ground now has a skid pad to test vehicles' ability to turn sharply at high speed, a 'free flat course' to evaluate high-speed slalom performance, and a winding track to assess high-speed vehicle handling.

Distinguished guests from local government authorities, including the Mayor of Mine (pronounced 'me-nay') City, Nobuo Kotake, attended the ceremony together with Mazda's senior executive officer in charge of R&D, Seita Kanai, and other senior Mazda executives. A tape cutting ceremony was held to celebrate the completion of the new test courses and a prayer for safety was offered.

Mazda to Participate in Norwegian National Project HyNor by Providing Hydrogen Cars to Norway From Summer 2008

HIROSHIMA, Japan—Mazda Motor Corporation and HyNor (Hydrogen Road of Norway) will collaborate in the development of hydrogen fuel and hydrogen vehicles. This was formally agreed at a signing ceremony held at the Norwegian Embassy in Tokyo today. His Excellency Mr. Åge B. Grutle, Norwegian ambassador to Japan, and Mr. Hisakazu Imaki, Mazda’s president and CEO, attended the event, at which Mr. Ulf Hafseld, chairman of HyNor, and Mr. Seita Kanai, Mazda’s director and senior managing executive officer in charge of Research and Development, signed a memorandum of understanding for collaboration and support in the development of a hydrogen economy. The memorandum states that HyNor intends to purchase 30 Mazda RX-8 Hydrogen RE vehicles commencing in summer 2008. For Mazda, these will be the first hydrogen vehicles sold outside of Japan.
