Ford Motor Company, Mazda Motor Corporation and Changan Automotive Group Gain Government Approval for New Manufacturing Facility
Submitted by Berny on Wednesday, January 19, 2005 - 19:26

Nanjing, January 7, 2005--Ford, Mazda and Changan Automotive Group jointly announced today that the Chinese central government has granted approval for a joint venture manufacturing facility in the Jiangning Economic & Technological Development Zone (NJDZ) near Nanjing, in the Jiangsu Province. The approval is another important step forward in the growing cooperation between Ford, Mazda and Changan Automotive in China.

The all-new vehicle manufacturing facility will be the first in China for all three companies working together. The 190,000 square meter facility will have an initial manufacturing capacity of 160,000 units a year and could be expanded to as many as 200,000 units annually.

The Year in Numbers
Submitted by Berny on Friday, January 14, 2005 - 17:55

The 2004 new car sales numbers are in and Mazda sales are up. This is especially important if you compare this year’s numbers against 2003. Why? In the automotive world, trends, rather than current positioning, are what’s important. Here’s an example why:

In 2004, Ford was the number one selling make in the United States. Ford outsold second place Chevrolet by 18,801 vehicles. That sounds great until you step back a little. In 2003, Ford was also the number one selling make in the United States. However, in 2003 Ford outsold second place Chevrolet by 243,992 vehicles. Ford lost market share and sold fewer total vehicles in 2004 than in 2003. Although the initial news was cause for celebration, the trend points to 2005 being a tough year for Ford.

2005 Los Angeles Auto-Show: Preview
Submitted by Berny on Thursday, January 6, 2005 - 18:52Other

It’s Auto Show season again, and MazdaNews.Com was on hand to cover and preview the Greater LA Auto Show this year, and we wanted to see what our favorite manufacturer, Mazda, had in store for us in ‘05.

There were a few cool Mazda show vehicles, like the Troy Lee designed pieces: an RX-8 and a Mazda3. There was also the Official Mazda RX-8 pace car, and a wild Mazda6 wagon with box flairs, and not so well fitting wheels. This was really it for the show stuff though.

On the production side, the new MazdaSpeed-6 was on hand, along with a full cut away that showed all of its drivetrain and engine detail. Beyond this was the whole line-up of existing production vehicles like the MPV, Mazda3, Mazda6, etc.. a lot of the production models were on display in all manner of different trim and options. So if you are considering a new Mazda, and are in Southern California area the next few weeks, stop by the show and check out all of the Mazdas on hand.

Mazda Ujima #1 Plant - Update
Submitted by Berny on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 - 13:41

If you’re considering the purchase of a new Rx-8 or MPV in the next couple of months, the December fire at the Ujima No. 1 plant may affect your plans. The currently idle Ujima No. 1 plant is where the Miata, MPV, and Rx-8 are all assembled. Last month Mazda stated the fire-ravaged plant would not resume production of those three models until late March. Due to this delay in production, trying to find a particular color and option combination may prove to be difficult as time moves on.

As of December 1st 2004, there was a 181-day supply of Miata’s, a 93-day supply of MPV’s, and 128-day supply of Rx-8’s in the United States. Based on those numbers, there could be very few, if any, MPVs available in late March.
