Mazda6 dragster does the 1/4-mile in 7.93 seconds
Submitted by Dan Mazzella on Friday, November 26, 2004 - 14:48Mazda6

MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development recently added a new chapter to its storied racing history as Ed Bergenholtz's PRO-FWD MAZDA6 dragster officially became the first import-nameplate front-wheel drive vehicle to tackle the quarter-mile in less than eight seconds.

With a time of 7.934 seconds at nearly 184 miles per hour, MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development and Bergenholtz now are members of an elite group of high-octane, high-speed performers.

Bergenholtz's record-setting run occurred on Oct. 23 at the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Sport Compact World Finals at Pomona Raceway in Pomona, Calif. The seven-second barrier has been the brass ring for many front-wheel drive competitors in years past, and prior to Bergenholtz's blistering run, the only teams to grasp it have been multi-million dollar factory programs from domestic nameplate manufacturers.

Mazda Enthusiast Vehicles…
Submitted by Berny on Wednesday, November 17, 2004 - 10:54

I’ll admit that this piece is a little extreme coming from a Rotorhead, but I’ll be the first to admit that it’s true. Mazda now has cool cars in its line-up that aren’t Rotary powered, there I said it!

Just a few years ago, the term Mazda enthusiast was synonymous with rotary power vehicle owners, only! Beyond the niche success of the only other sporty product, the Miata, there really wasn’t any enthusiasm for the rest of the Mazda line-up, and with good reason. But a few years ago Mazda started to look inward and realize that they were not going to beat the BIG-3 Japanese makers at their own game and decided to do what they do best, performance. Since this change Mazda’s fortunes and enthusiasm and enthusiast have started to change.

LOS ANGELES -- Mazda North American Operations is staging a comeback. But much of the automaker's success will depend on its ability to enhance customer loyalty.

Mazda's U.S. sales are up 4.8 percent through September. The company successfully launched the Mazda3 compact sedan and hatchback. Sales remain strong for the Mazda6 mid-sized sedan, hatchback and wagon.

The RX-8 sports car survived an early snafu regarding overstated horsepower and is close to meeting sales objectives.
