Circuit City, Sony and Protomotive Go Racing and Drifting

Circuit City will renew its Marketing partnership with Protomotive Racing to compete in the 2004 SCCA SPEED World Challenge Touring Car Championship and also the 2004 Formula Drift series. This marks the third year of this relationship.

"We are so excited to continue our partnership with Circuit City," said team Owner Joe Jordan. "They want to reach a young, enthusiastic audience, and I am glad that Circuit City recognizes that Protomotive's Motorsports programs offer a unique and effective way to target this audience."

Mazda came up with the plan to participate in motor racing to prove that the rotary engine, the world's first mass-produced engine of its kind, ensured high-performance, reliability and durability. This was when the company launched the Cosmo Sport, the first vehicle in the world powered by a multi-rotor rotary power unit. The two racing-trim Cosmo Sports were baptized at the Nordshleife, Nurburgring where the "Marathon de la Route," an 84-hour endurance event, was held on August 21, 1968.

Mazda3 Wins Canadian Car of the Year for 2004

Mazda Motor Corporation's Mazda3 sports compact, a vehicle known as Axela in Japan, has been named Canadian Car of the Year for 2004 by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). The announcement was made during the opening ceremonies for the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto on February 11, 2004.

Founded in 1984, the Canadian Car of the Year award is the country's most prestigious and coveted automobile prize. The annual award, conducted through secret ballot following extensive vehicle testing, is organized by over 50 AJAC members representing major publications across Canada. This year marks the first time that Mazda placed first in the Canadian Car of the Year competition.

SCCA Pro Racing Announces Remaining Miata Cup Pacific Tour Schedule

TOPEKA, Kan. - SCCA Pro Racing announced the remainder of the Mazdaspeed Miata Cup Presented by Hankook Tires® Pacific Tour 2004 schedule today. The full season Pacific Tour schedule will include event weekends at Phoenix International Raceway, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and Portland International Raceway.

The Miata Cup Pacific Tour kicks off the 2004 season with two races at Phoenix International Raceway April 3-4. The Pacific Tour will headline the "Fifth Annual Spring Racing Invitational to Benefit Phoenix Children's Hospital."

Toyota, Mazda announce telematics tie-up

TOKYO, Feb 10 (Reuters) - Mazda Motor Corp <7261.T>, Japan's No.5 auto maker, said on Tuesday it would ally with Toyota Motor Corp <7203.T> in the telematics field in a move that will give Toyota's G-Book format an undisputed edge over rival services. Telematics services provide updated information on traffic conditions and other useful services via terminals similar to car navigation systems. The tie-up would bring to five the number of auto makers using the G-Book service in what could be seen as a defeat for Nissan Motor Co <7201.T>, which has tried to persuade others to use its own service.

RX-8 Tops Mazda UK Sales

Mazda UK didn’t just record a 41% sales increase last month over January 2003, but also found the RX-8 rotary-engined coupé to be its best seller.

Out of 3746 January sales - up from 2650 a year before - the RX-8 took 1122, demoting the Mazda6 which finished with 1091 to second place, even though 6 sales were up 27%.

Mazda is hosting two concept car launches at next month’s Geneva Show. The MX-Micro Sport, unveiled at Detroit, will make its European debut, and the six-seat MX-Flexa - "demonstrating one possible direction Mazda could take in creating a future space wagon" - will have its world première.

Mazda to launch SUV for U.S. market in 2006

TOKYO, Feb 10 (Reuters) - Japan's Mazda Motor Corp <7261.T> plans to launch an upmarket sport utility vehicle (SUV) for the North American market in 2006, hoping to improve its profit margins there, a newspaper reported on Tuesday. If true, it will be the first Mazda model to be designed specifically for the North American market. Mazda's strength lies in small cars and it has struggled in North America where larger cars are more popular. The Nihon Keizai newspaper said Mazda, which is one-third owned by Ford Motor Co (nyse: F - news - people), would aim for annual sales of 50,000 units.
