Submitted by SuperUser on Thursday, February 5, 2004 - 11:38

IRVINE, Calif. – Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) today reported sales of 18,637 units in January—a 24.7 percent increase versus the same period last year and Mazda’s best January since 1985. The increase marks Mazda’s fourth consecutive month of double-digit monthly sales increases from the prior year.

Mazda’s strong January was led by its sporty Miata roadster. The legendary warm-weather convertible was seemingly unaffected by the winter chill, posting a 21.1 percent increase in January sales. In addition, after a successful year-end launch toward the close of 2003, Mazda reported ramped-up January sales of 4,426 units for its all-new MAZDA3 sport compact. Last month, sales of the highly acclaimed vehicle totaled 1,921 units. Mazda also reported sales of 4,121 units for its MAZDA6 flagship sedan—nearly double last year’s January total.

Just Driven: Mazda 3
Submitted by SuperUser on Friday, January 30, 2004 - 09:54

Mazda has been busy this year injecting its seriously sporty DNA into the market with the RX-8, Mazda 6, and coming soon to a showroom near you, the Mazda3. While the Protegé it replaces is seductively priced at less than $14K, it ain't the sexiest thing. The Mazda3, however, should prove to be a trump card in the incredibly competitive C segment; it has upmarket looks, European refinement, and performance built into the base model—and it's getting better from there.

The Mazda3 will be available both as a four-door and a five-door hatch, and the latter projects a sportier image in addition to its increased functionality. The Mazda3 is larger in every dimension than the Protegé it replaces, and the larger sheet metal pays big dividends in interior room. On the five-door, fat fender flares, an Alfa 147-esque rear, and decidedly Mazda front end combine to produce a dynamic, fun-looking car.

Submitted by SuperUser on Thursday, January 29, 2004 - 13:34

Mazda won double honours at the What Car? Awards 2004 last night with Best Coupé for Mazda RX-8 and Best Estate for Mazda6 for the second consecutive year.

"Normal comparisons simply don’t do it justice, because the Mazda RX-8 is like no other car on the road," commented What Car? editor Rob Aherne.

What Car? praised the Mazda RX-8 for its ‘jaw-dropping styling’ as an essential part of any coupé’s allure. The road testers liked the sleek lines that hide a layout unique to this class, with smaller doors behind the front two. What Car? said that where most rivals’ rear benches are all but useless, the Mazda RX-8’s are actually capable of carrying two full-grown adults. To complete a class-leading practicality package there’s even a well-shaped, usefully large boot, What Car? enthused.
