Zoom times 3! A Weekend of Mazda Wins!
Submitted by Dan Mazzella on Monday, April 4, 2005 - 11:36MazdaSpeed

It was a great weekend at the track for MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development as Team Bergenholtz, SpeedSource and Tri-Point Motorsports recorded victories for Mazda in three different professional production-based racing series in which the manufacturer participates.

"What a weekend!" remarked Steve Sanders, manager, MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development and the man responsible for Mazda's North American motorsport operations.

In action at Fontana, Calif.'s California Speedway, Sylvain Tremblay and David Haskell's SpeedSource Mazda RX-8 took victory in the Sport Touring class of the Grand Am Cup. Taking advantage of a strong move early in the race that moved the team into the lead, they were well placed when a mid-race full-course caution allowed them to gain a lap over the field. The victory moves Tremblay and Haskell to the points lead as they move to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for the next race of the season at the US Sports Car Invitational,April 29-30.

On the other side of the country in St. Petersburg, Fla., Randy Pobst took his Tri-Point Motorsports MAZDA6 to victory in the SPEED World Challenge Touring Class. After qualifying at the front of the field, Pobst was beaten to turn one but regained the lead as the race returned to green-flag conditions after a full-course yellow. Pobst was never again headed, the victory ever sweeter after mechanical issues dropped him out of the previous race in Sebring, Fla., while he was leading. Pobst is now fifth in the driver's points standings; Mazda is second in the manufacturer's standings.

Also in Florida, Sport Compact veteran Ed Bergenholtz captured his first career NHRA Sport Compact national event victory with an impressive Pro FWD performance in a weekend of record-setting action at the third annual BFGoodrich Tires NHRA Sport Compact Nationals presented by BUZZ 103.1 & R.J. Gators at Moroso Motorsports Park.

Matos Wins Season opener of Star Mazda
Submitted by Dan Mazzella on Saturday, March 19, 2005 - 10:55MazdaSpeed

Sunny skies returned to central Florida on Friday and fortune shown on Raphael Matos, who lead wire-to-wire to claim victory in the opening round of the Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear today at Sebring International Raceway as part of the 53rd Annual 12 Hours of Sebring activities. Joining Matos on the podium for the first of twelve rounds were Matt Jaskol and Graham Rahal.

Matos, of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, started on the pole position for today's 20-lap event based on his best practice times of the weekend after qualifying was washed out by Thursday's heavy storms, but proved that he belonged out front, pulling away to a five second victory over the Las Vegas, NV, native Jaskol. "I have to give all the credit to the team this weekend," Matos said afterwards. "Mylon Stockton and Rick Cameron and the rest of the Ocean Tomo Racing crew worked really hard this offseason to put this program together and to finish in front of a field this deep is a great way to start the season. I also hope this will help me as I work to find the budget to complete the entire season."

- Mazda to Bring Famed Le Mans Class Winner to Sports Car Invitational -

IRVINE, Calif. -- In 1984 the Lola T616 Mazda racecars made motorsports history. This weekend at the Road and Track U.S. Sports Car Invitational, the Mazdas make a triumphant return as fans have a rare opportunity to see them complete their first hot laps in 20 years.

When the Lola T616 Mazda first took to the track, it featured a modified 13B rotary engine and was rated at 300-horsepower. As with all rotary engines, the T616 lacked the displacement of competitors' engines, but more than made up for this short-coming with incredible, high-revving reliability and the engine's small size and low weight.

1. Dawn of Mazda Racing History

Cosmo Sport 110S and Races:

Mazda came up with the plan to participate in motor racing to prove that the rotary engine, the world's first mass-produced engine of its kind, ensured high-performance, reliability and durability.
