Mazda to recall 12,000 vehicles

TOKYO October 05, 2006 - Mazda Motor Corp. said on Thursday it would recall more than 12,000 vehicles in Japan to replace their air bags after three accidents were reported because of the faulty parts.

Mazda, one-third owned by Ford Motor Co., said the 12,235 vehicles covered were the Premacy, Atenza and Ixion, sold under the Ford brand, that were manufactured between March 1999 and July 2002.

Company spokeswoman Aya Takahashi said the company did not yet know the cost of replacing the air bags, which could abruptly unfold, or how many vehicles it will recall overseas. About 19,000 of the models were produced during the period and exported, she said.

Mazda Launches Distribution Operations in the Czech Republic and Slovakia

HIROSHIMA, Japan-- Mazda Motor Europe, Mazda Motor Corporation's European affiliate, announced that it commenced operation today of two new national sales companies (NSCs) in the Czech Republic and Slovak Republic, with official transfer of distribution from Mazda's long-standing distributor, Auto Palace Praha, taking place yesterday. The appointment of new Managing Director for both NSCs, Ivan Ruzicka, was subject of an announcement earlier this year. Mr. Ruzicka, with Thomas Egan as Financial Director, will lead an 18-member staff in the Czech Republic and a 7-member staff in Slovakia. Headquarters are located in Prague and Bratislava respectively.

No Mazda Vehicles on Car-Carrying Vessel Cougar Ace will be Sold as New!

HIROSHIMA, Japan-- Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) today announced that the Mazda vehicles aboard the car-carrying vessel, Cougar Ace, which ran into trouble on July 23, 2006, off the Alaskan coast, resulting in her listing some 60-plus degrees, will not be sold as new vehicles.

"While we do not, at this time, know the full extent of the damage to vehicles on board, none of the Mazdas will be sold as new", said Jim O'Sullivan, president and CEO of MNAO. "Those beyond repair will be immediately scrapped. It is possible that those vehicles which are repairable would be made available for sale as used cars through Mazda's dealer network in the U.S. and Canada. We will only be in a position to decide on any used car sales once the vessel has been unloaded and each unit comprehensively inspected."

Mazda to Sponsor Petit Le Mans Race at Road Atlanta

Road Atlanta, host site for Petit Le Mans, one of the crown jewels of sports car racing worldwide, has announced a partnership with Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) that will begin with this year's race Sept. 27-30.

The partnership is reflected in the name of Round Nine of the 2006 American Le Mans Series, which will now become "Petit Le Mans powered by Mazda CX-7."

"Petit Le Mans is recognized as one of the premier sports car races in the world," said Robert Davis, Sr. Vice President of Product Quality & Research for Mazda North American Operations. "Not only does it bear the name of the world's greatest and oldest auto race, but it has become an event that captures international attention from fans, television viewers, corporate executives and, of course, our customers. It is the perfect partnership: one of the world's premier endurance races and Mazda's new crossover sport utility vehicle, the 244-hp CX-7."

Mazda Publishes Social and Environmental Report 2006

HIROSHIMA, Japan--Mazda Motor Corporation today issued its Social and Environmental Report 2006 in Japanese* which features the results of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives and environmental protection activities conducted during fiscal year 2005 (April 2005--March 2006).

Mazda has produced an annual environmental report since 2001, and an annual CSR report that contains supplemental social information since 2004.

The Social and Environmental Report (SER) 2006 is the most diverse to date, with information on Mazda's international cultural exchange projects and contributions towards the promotion of human rights. It also introduces projects being led by women in quality circles and contains enhanced environmental information, such as the mid-term environmental plan "Mazda Green Plan 2010." Additionally, contents include local community initiatives and environmental information concerning overseas affiliates of the Mazda Group. Every page also features stakeholders' comments.
